Bouldering crash pads have been known to become quite heavy for a lot of climbers when hauling them into remote bouldering fields. They are typically designed to have backpack straps or other features to make transporting them more manageable. However, that doesn’t do anything to reduce their weight.
On average, standard size bouldering crash pads weigh approximately 11.3 lbs (5.1 kg) and are 4″ (10 cm) thick with a landing area of 48″ x 36″ (122 x 91 cm). Full and oversized crash pads are larger and heavier than standard pads while supplemental and kids pads are smaller and lighter.
The weight of a crash pad is not only influenced by how big it is but also by the type of material(s) it is made of. This article lists the size and weight of 71 popular crash pads and discusses why some are heavier than others. Read on to see the lightest and biggest crash pads currently on the market!

The crash pads listed in the table above were used to find the average size and weight for each category. The results of this are discussed in the following sections. If you are new to bouldering outside, check out my article that details how to properly use a crash pad when you go.
Size and Weight of Standard Size Bouldering Crash Pads
Standard crash pads are also commonly referred to as “medium pads” or “half pads”. These pads can be used by themselves for a lot of bouldering problems and are commonly used in multiple pad systems (either stacked or placed next to each other). How many pads you will use (either just one or multiple) will depend on the area you are climbing in.
On average, standard crash pads have a landing area of 48″ x 36″ (122 x 91 cm) and are 4″ thick (10 cm). The majority of standard crash pads weigh between 9 and 13.5 lbs (4.1 and 6.1 kg).
The three lightest standard crash pads are:
- Metolius Basic – 7.4 lbs (3.4 kg)
- Black Diamond Circuit – 8.3 lbs (3.8 kg)
- Camp USA Minido – 8.4 lbs (3.8 kg)
The four heaviest standard crash pads are:
- Kinetik Newton 4.0 (Alpine) – 14.8 lbs (6.7 kg)
- Evolv Drop – 14 lbs (6.4 kg)
- Mad Rock Hera – 14 lbs (6.4 kg)
- Mad Rock Mad Pad – 14 lbs (6.4 kg)
The factors that make these pads heavier/lighter than each other is discussed later in the article.
Size and Weight of Full and Oversized Bouldering Crash Pads
Full pads are commonly referred to as “large pads” or “big pads”. A lot of climbers will opt for full sized pads which are larger than “standard” size crash pads and provide a bigger landing area. This bigger landing area typically provides climbers (especially newer ones) with a greater sense of security. That said, pads become heavier and harder to transport/carry as they get bigger.
On average, full crash pads have a landing area of 55″ x 44″ (140 x 112 cm) and range between 4″ and 5″ (10 to 13 cm) thick. The majority of full crash pads weigh between 14 and 20 lbs (6.4 and 9.1 kg).
Oversized pads are even larger than full pads and are commonly used for highballing. That said, there is nothing stopping you from using them for normal bouldering problems in flat areas.
The biggest bouldering crash pad is the Evolv Home measuring in at 96” x 48” x 5” (244 x 122 x 12.7 cm) and weighing 33 lbs (15 kg)! It is so large in fact that it is commonly used as a permanent indoor home climbing wall pad.
The bouldering crash pad with the biggest landing area that climbers will typically take with them outside is the Metolius Magnum measuring in at 70″ x 47″ (178 x 120 cm). The Mad Rock Triple Mad Pad is actually the biggest pad when taking the thickness and total volume of material into account.
The four heaviest outdoor bouldering crash pads are:
- Mad Rock Triple Mad Pad – 24 lbs (10.9 kg)
- Petzl Cirro – 20.7 lbs (9.4 kg)
- Black Diamond Mondo – 20.4 lbs (9.3 kg)
- Send Pro 4×4 Highball – 20.4 lbs (9.3 kg)
Size and Weight of Supplemental and Kids Bouldering Crash Pads
Supplemental crash pads are designed to be used in conjunction with standard/larger pads. They are typically able to cover gaps in between pads, stack on top of others, slide, or be used as sit starts. As such, these are generally smaller and lighter than your standard crash pad.
Kids bouldering pads are commonly found to be smaller (36″ x 24″ x 3″) and as such are often used as supplemental pads themselves by adults.
On average, supplemental crash pads range between 1″ and 3″ (2.5 to 7.6 cm) thick and weigh between 2 and 6.5 lbs (0.9 and 2.9 kg). Due to their wide array of intended use, the landing area size of supplemental pads varies greatly between models.
The supplemental pads with the largest landing areas when open are the Organic Blubber and Kinetik AttoNewton 1.0 measuring in at 72″ x 48″ (183 x 122 cm).
Factors That Influence the Weight of Bouldering Crash Pads
Besides the overall size of the crash pad, the main factor influencing their weight is their foam’s composition. Crash pads are made up of two different types of foam – open and closed cell.
Open cell foam is less dense and lighter than closed cell foam. Most standard/full size pads have a combination of both foam types to catch (closed cell) and cushion (open cell) a climber’s fall. Oversized crash pads are commonly used for highballing and therefore have a large amount of closed cell foam to absorb the larger impact of falling from higher up.
In general, pads with a larger amount of closed cell foam will be more durable and last longer than ones with a lot of open cell foam. That said, they are typically heavier and “harder” as well. To see how long you can expect a crash pad to last, check out my article here.
Other factors that affect the weight of a crash pad include the type of cover material and additional features attached to it (straps, mats, etc.). While they do factor in a bit, they are very minor influences on a pad’s weight compared to its size and foam composition.
